Clients who practice Islam may refuse to take medication in capsule form. The material that the capsule is made from may include pork sources. Insulin derived from pork may be refused. Gelatin-containing foods made from animal hide trimmings are also prohibited. Foods such as biscuits, ice cream, soups, yogurt, cakes, etc. may contain animal-based gelatin. Food prepared by the health care facility may be refused unless the patient or family can be assured that it has been prepared according to Muslim standards. If liquid medicines contain alcohol, check with the pharmacist to determine if the medication is available without alcohol. If there are no other alternatives, the individual should be made aware and allowed to decide on taking medication.
